2004 Nonprofit Achievement Award
Morris Dees Honored
On February 27, 2004 The Direct Marketing Association Nonprofit Federation presented Morris Dees, Co-Founder and Chief Trial Counsel of the Southern Poverty Law Center, with its 2004 Nonprofit Achievement Award. Dees was honored during the group's annual Washington Nonprofit Conference held at The Capital Hilton in Washington, DC.
Each year, The DMA Nonprofit Federation recognizes a leader in the nonprofit community for his/her unprecedented dedication and service. Criteria for the Nonprofit Achievement Award include:
- Demonstrated service as a source of encouragement and inspiration to others by exemplifying the highest levels of excellence in their work.
- Recognition as an innovative leader in the nonprofit community.
- Serves as a role model in the professional development of others.
- Meets the highest ethical standards of the nonprofit community.
- Outstanding record of achievement during the previous year or longer.
For over 30 years, Morris Dees has been a champion of civil rights. He has committed his professional career to stamping out hate crimes and pursuing equal opportunities for minorities and the poor. As co-founder and Chief Trial Counsel, he has been a leader in the nonprofit sector and has been instrumental in the meteoric growth of the Center’s supporters, which now number in excess of 500,000. The fundraising activities of the Southern Poverty Law Center are equally impressive with an endowment of approximately $100,000,000.
